Established in 1995, Canuck Place Children’s Hospice (Canuck Place) is an example of incredible impact that comes from the courage and vision of individuals and organizations working together. The vision for North America’s first free-standing children’s hospice was to help fill a gap in care by providing high-quality palliative care in a home-like environment for children 0-19 with life-threatening illnesses and their families.
Canuck Place has been modelled after by several jurisdictions in the planning of children’s palliative hospice care programs in Canada and abroad. Since opening, Canuck Place has served thousands of families in British Columbia & Yukon who have children with progressive, life-threatening illnesses. The program encompasses two operating hospice sites providing 13 patient beds and 4 family suites provincially, and community-based care through in-home, in hospital and consult services.
With the upcoming retirement of the current Chief Executive Officer (CEO), an opportunity exists for a dynamic executive to lead Canuck Place Children’s Hospice to its next level of growth and success. Reporting to a Board of Directors, the CEO is responsible for providing strategic direction and leadership to all activities of Canuck Place in accordance with the vision and values of the organization. As the public face of the organization, the CEO will elevate the awareness and understanding of Canuck Place and play a key role in attracting partners, donors and supporters and in contributing materially to the development of a highly skilled, focused and engaged team. Building on past successes, the CEO will challenge and inspire the organization to set and meet even higher goals in terms of fundraising and the provision of care for children and their families and at such a vulnerable time in their lives.
The ideal candidate will bring a track record of success leading a complex and critically impactful organization working in the service of others and at a time of change. An understanding of health systems will be considered advantageous, as will be experience in government relations and fundraising. An ability to coalesce and inspire teams, develop key relationships with external partners at all levels will be key.
This position is based in Vancouver at the original Glen Brae - Canuck Place, but frequent travel to, and time in, the organization’s other two sites (administrative offices on South Granville Street and Canuck Place - Dave Lede House in Abbottsford) will be important.
